Belleville fall sports take spotlight as training begins

A good season could be in store for the Belleville High cross country team as a strong nucleus of athletes return this fall.

Coached by Nick Campione and his sister, Joanne Campione-Porecco, both of whom were former BHS runners, the Bucs will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 8, with the girls' team facing Science Park and University, while the boys will race against Weequahic and Glen Ridge in Super Essex Conference matchups. Both races will be held at Branch Brook Park in Newark, and should start around 4 p.m.

Campione noted that both the boys and girls will have a number of returning athletes on its team.

Among the returning boys are Dan Castano, Mayck Calle, Arik Odre, Josh Uceta, Kiel Delasalas, Julian Roca and Sebastian Paez.

Some new additions from last winter and spring's track team include Sam Abreu, Joseph Rivera, and Wady Then.

"We also are very excited by the additions of Sal Petrozzino and Chad Manning," said Campione.

For the girls, Ilce Perez, Annmaria Albert, Andrea Romero, Sara Manning, Bernice Banks, Camillah Nigatu, Korryn Versola, Sydney Gomez, Nancy Vu and Christa Cordeiro highlight a talented team.

Fatimah Elbelkasi is a freshmen who could get the chance to run on the varsity.
